Which Linux distributions do you recommend? (14)

1 Name: Anonymous : 2017-11-30 07:39 ID:6VI/iUsq [Del]

Hello,
Recently, I had to reformat my computer due to Windows Insider Builds ("if you don't update, your computer will stop working for no apparent reason. Oh, and you can't update because your Internet speed is really slow", said my computer in a more cryptic way). So I installed Debian, but I don't like their stable but old software model because I don't like old software (above all, I don't like to have old Orca versions), nor their unstable or testing models because I may break something. I am also a beginner in the Linux world.
So, based on this, which of the millions of distributions would you recommend? I think I may settle on Antergos (a friendlier Arch derivative, based on what I've heard). Any opinions?

Hi,
So I finally settled on Talking Arch, because I disliked Antergos (I can't recall why exactly).
But now I've got a somewhat irritating problem. My terminal window (the Virtual Console) doesn't want to scroll, and Shift + pgup and Shift + pgdn don't work.
Any ideas why?
Thanks!

I'm not sur since I don't use Arch I probably have something different. It could be something in the VC settings or the window manager settings. In the mean time if the console won't scroll down to show new input (as opposed to not scrolling up), you can usually enter terminal only session with ctrl+alt+[f1-f6]. Return to the default GUI session with ctrl+alt+f7

I have no GUI at the moment, no window applications, display manager or desktop environment. Just virtual consoles.

Debian indeed.

I personally like the Arch Way (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?title=The_Arch_Way&redirect=no), and you will hardly find a better, and more consistent operating system that you can customise the way you like.

It needs to be said, however, that Arch is a bit tricky to run as a server, but it's definitely doable.

As a desktop, or a home server it certainly works.

I would not recommend Debian. While it is good and stable, it's ancient, its packages are really lagging behind, and 99% of the time, when you wish to install software, you need to add an external PPA. I do not find this acceptable in 2018.

Arch's community, package manager, not to mention its wiki is unmatched.

But isn't Debian rock solid stable but like really, really, really outdated?

A Virus Could be Responsible for Human Consciousness (4)

1 Name: Anonymous : 2018-06-08 09:05 ID:hkIIkU9I [Del]

As ridiculous as it may sound, this could be true. Read this article for further details. What do you think? I personally find this fascinating, especially because there are numerous theories about how the world we see is just a perception that our mind creates, through filters, such as turning an image upside down, etc. There are things that can be perceived differently by people, which suggests that our world, or rather, what we see of it, is personalised and nobody really knows the real appearance of it.

Speaking of viruses, this is labelled as the most dangerous being on Earth, an interesting introduction worth watching: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YI3tsmFsrOg

I stumbled across this literally just now.
I'm proudly using WaterFox on Windows 10 with a screen reader (NVDA - NonVisual Desktop Access from HTTP://WWW.NVAccess.Org/)
I'm congenitally blind, so I've never had the ability even to see objects or shadows;
I did have early light perception (but without seeing color) till about 14 or so years old.
Then it went to total darkness.
As per this website, it really is not too shabby of a place.
All I really have left to say is: Ding!

It's really not often I write about the behavior of a website.
Most of the time, I tab (as in the Tab key) around the layout or use the arrow keys.
If underlined letters or keystrokes are included, NVDA most likely will tell me these.
This site is just an honest simple layout I wish more companies would use, just because it's east to tab around and locate things.
While most modern sites are so convoluted I can't do basic navigation under the burial of all the third-party content unnecessarily getting in my way, this site here reminds me of an old Listereen commercial.
Oh that one...
"Says what it does, does what it says."
I'm quietly on the prowl for websites with simple honest layouts that celiver me an experience on par with a "normal" sighted person.
You coders here are awesome;
Keep up the awesome work!

19 Name: Anonymous : 2018-11-19 14:53 ID:4p/uphT7 [Del]

That's sad. It was about a guy who, as a kid, had a mysterious man visit them, and every single member of his family just accepted him as a friend. Later on, it turned out that the guy was an alien, and if they disturbed him or questioned him, he turned violent and destroyed everything in sight.

By the way, The Old Man Down the Road is sadly no longer available, it was a great story.

Lucid dreaming (8)

1 Name: Anonymous : 2017-08-25 04:56 ID:OEWcuRZ9 [Del]

Hi,

So I've been trying to learn how to lucid dream for the last few days. So far, I've only achieved it once, and I don't know how I did it. Contrary to what I've read, it was stable enough and I didn't wake up immediately, and I even summoned a dream character (a friend of mine), who was aware, like me, that this was real.

The rest of the time, I seem to accept the dream and not question it: I don't ask myself how I got there, nor try to go through my palm with my other thumb, nor try to breathe with my nose and mouth shut, although I do some of these like every four hours or so, or when I remember.

Anyone here wants to share his / her experience?

2 Name: Anonymous : 2017-08-25 10:38 ID:OEWcuRZ9 [Del]

Obvious errata: "[He] was aware, like me that this was[n't] real", "although I do some of these like every four hours or so [when I'm awake], or when I remember".

3 Name: Anonymous : 2017-08-25 14:14 ID:DYseYtia [Del]

Unfortunately, lucid dreaming is not something that you can learn in just a few days. It's definitely an awesome experience, just make sure you don't overdo it, because your body needs rest, too. When you are lucid dreaming, you are certainly not resting.

4 Name: Anonymous : 2017-08-25 16:44 ID:OEWcuRZ9 [Del]

I know it requires a lot of time. I've just started with it so I didn't hope to get results that soon.

5 Name: Anonymous : 2017-08-26 10:04 ID:DYseYtia [Del]

>>4 Awesome! Good luck!

6 Name: Anonymous : 2017-08-28 11:28 ID:dDLMe/7a [Del]

Luckd dreaming is really really hard. If you can do it, I respect you. The only thing harder than lucid dreaming is episodic dreaming--done intentionally that is

7 Name: Anonymous : 2018-02-06 14:59 ID:hk0/m6rm [Del]

Hi,
Just commenting to share two stories. First, I had a dream which, at the time, semed rather significant. Unfortunately, I didn't write it down, so now I don't remember it, nor the reason why I thought so.
Second, I had a really weird lucid dream, where I knew I was dreaming because I alternated between two rooms instantly multiple times, but couldn't wake up nor do anything else, except talk with my brother in the second room. Somewhat scary.
